Resources to Make you Smarter:
The following is a list of resources that I guarantee will make you smarter:
- Podcasts that I listen to every
morning or every week, depending on their publication schedule:
- Way
with Words -- Longer episodes than the other programs,
but you can't help being entertained and educated. Grant Barrett, one
of the co-host, also seems to be a part of Wordnik.
- Merriam
Webster Word of the Day -- Seven days a week I listen to
this and learn new words and etymologies of words I already know. Well
worth it.
- Grammar
Grater -- Amazingly entertaining. This
used to be delivered once a week. They stopped making new podcasts in 2010.
- Grammar
Girl -- Good writing tips.
- Books
- Webpages
- Mental
Floss - Blog -- Place to get exciting information. Not very English
related, but many of the lists can help with brainstorming attention-getters.
Important Documents:
Useful Free Software:
- Please type everything for my class. If you do not own MS Word, think
about using:
- Google
Docs -- You can save your document and access it anywhere.
You can save it as Word file to turn in through Moodle. You can save
it as a PDF. And you can print the document. You might want to think
about using this resource, even if you do own MS Word.
- OpenOffice.org
-- I have not used this program. But I trust it. It is open source,
and I use plenty of open source software.
- ABI WORD PROCESSOR
PROGRAM
-- It is extremely similar to MS WORD. It will even
open Word documents without a problem. You can save documents
as MS WORD documents.
- Free Websites for Checking for Plagiarism:
-- I have been playing with this site, and it seems extremely useful.
Besides telling you if you have anything to worry about in regard to
plagiarism, it also highlights some style issues, which a typical grammar
check doesn't catch.
-- This site just checks for plagiarism.
